Stargirl, by jerry spinelli

This book is about one girl named Stargirl who is just about to go into a real school for the first time in her life after being home schooled.
She was different and not like anyone else. she walked into school with a long dress, a sunflower toe bag (inside a ukulele), no makeup, and a rat on her shoulder. people didn't know what to make of her except for her to be their friend. She walks in and instantly becomes one of the "cool" girls.
The first person that had caught her attention in the first day of school was Leo. Leo was the Average middle school boy. he had a bunch of friends and had okay grades.
Both him and his friend owned their own TV show. the TV show interviewed people from their school who was recognized for something they have done. some people might call it embarrassment but some might call it being on TV!
Later on when Stargirl got used to school, she tried out for cheer leading and then of course got in. Her third basketball game she went on cheering for her team when a player from the other team had fallen. Being Stargirl she runs over and consoles the player while the rest of her team is there watching her.
Ever since then she has been out of place and no one has liked her except for Leo because everyone had thought she had let down her school. The only thing that was keeping her up was Leo. But there was just one problem now, Leo didn't know what to do because he was now scared to show his face in school with Stargirl without being made fun of. So, he told Stargirl that he thought that she should change to be normal and have a normal name. she thought and then quickly agreed. The next day at school she showed up with a regular tee-shirt, a regular pair of jeans, a regular purse, makeup and no rat. The people at school didn't change their reaction much so she gave up. Later on she realized that being "cool" wasn't what she was and she shouldn't change herself for anyone.
This book was really fun to read because it kept on getting more interesting as i went on. when i first started reading it i thought it was okay. Then when i kept on going i couldn't get my hands off.
I liked this book a lot because you can tell what it was like because the age range. i related to the book from the book a lot from life in school now because of all the new people coming into school. i felt that there was a high possibility of this situation happening now.
I think that this book could relate to other people too and especially kids around my age. so i would highly recommend reading this book.
One of my most used reading strategy is mental imaging. when i read a book it is a movie. this reading strategy always works for me because it is easy for me to understand something when i can mentally see it.
through out this book i used mental imaging to help me see what was going on. when Stargirl put up a bed sheet on a wall outside of school i could see a bed sheet out on a brick wall and the sheet saying "i love Leo -Stargirl" on it.
when i read that Stargirl was dancing by herself at the ball. i could see what i thought Stargirl looked like dancing under a disco ball in a medium sized room with different colored strings hanging from the walls and a double door leading to a patio.
The author Jerry Spinelli had a wonderful life. he was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. he started in Stewart junior high and then followed by Eisenhower high school. then attended Gettysburg college and then also attended Johns Hopkins University.
Jerry Spinelli has written a lot of books about bullying even though Jerry has never been bullied he has seen it and felt it on the behalf of others.
